How strikethrough and overline text are built

Strikethrough you can copy and paste is made the same way as glitch text — with Unicode combining marks — just used tastefully. A combining mark is a zero-width character that attaches to the character before it; instead of stacking many for a corrupted look, a strikethrough tool adds exactly one line-style mark after each letter. The long stroke overlay (U+0336) draws a line straight through the middle of the character for the classic crossed-out effect; the short solidus overlay (U+0337) gives a slashed look; and the combining low line (U+0332) sits beneath the character for a continuous underline. Because the mark is part of the text rather than a formatting attribute, the line travels with the characters wherever they go, which is why it works in plain-text fields — Instagram captions, Discord messages, Twitter/X, and forms — that offer no strikethrough button. People use it for to-do lists where an item is done, for showing an old price next to a new one, for edits and corrections, and for the comedic "I said too much" effect. A few things are worth knowing. Each font decides exactly where a combining mark lands, so the line can sit a hair high or low depending on the device, though it stays clearly legible as a strike. Spaces are usually left unmarked so the line breaks naturally between words. And, as with all decorative Unicode, accessibility suffers: a screen reader may not announce that text is struck through, so never depend on strikethrough alone to carry meaning that a reader must not miss. Some apps — WhatsApp and Telegram, for instance — already support their own native strikethrough via markup like tildes; this tool is most useful precisely where that native option does not exist.
