The midpoint formula in geometry and beyond

The midpoint formula is one of the foundational tools in coordinate geometry, taught in middle-school algebra and used throughout high school and college math. It is derived directly from the definition of the average of two numbers: the midpoint is the point equidistant from both endpoints along a straight line segment. Beyond pure geometry, midpoints show up in computer graphics (line subdivision algorithms like the midpoint circle algorithm), physics (calculating the center of mass of a two-particle system with equal masses), GIS and mapping (finding meet-in-the-middle locations between two addresses), and statistics (the midrange of a dataset is the midpoint of the minimum and maximum values). The 3D extension just adds a third coordinate average. The same principle generalizes to n dimensions for vector spaces in linear algebra.
