Dunk Calculator

Enter your height and standing reach to find out exactly how high you need to jump to dunk a standard 10-foot basketball rim. See your vertical gap, athleticism rating, and specific training targets to get you dunking.

How high you can reach flat-footed, arm fully extended. Measure at home or leave blank.

How the Dunk Calculator works

Three simple steps. No signup. No installation.

1

Enter your height

Your height in feet/inches or cm. Used to estimate standing reach if you don't know it.

2

Enter standing reach (optional)

How high you can reach flat-footed with arm fully extended. Defaults to height Γ— 1.33.

3

See your dunk gap

How many inches above the rim you need to reach, and the vertical jump needed to close that gap.

The physics and training science behind dunking

Dunking a basketball requires overcoming a precise physical gap: the rim is at 10 feet, and you need your hand at least 6 inches above it to place the ball β€” so fingertip reach must hit 126 inches. The gap between your standing reach and 126 inches is your vertical jump requirement. Most adults need a 24–40 inch vertical depending on height. The world record standing vertical jump is 46 inches (Brett Williams, 2019). In the NBA, the average vertical is about 28 inches. Training the vertical primarily targets fast-twitch muscle fibers in the quadriceps, glutes, and calves. Plyometric exercises are the most evidence-backed method for increasing jump height. Most programs report 4–8 inch gains in 8–12 weeks.
