The history of ambigram design

Ambigrams have roots stretching back to medieval calligraphy, but the term was coined by cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter in 1983. The art form gained mainstream attention through Scott Kim's lettering work in the 1980s and later through Dan Brown's 2000 novel Angels & Demons, which featured ambigrams created by typographer John Langdon. Today ambigrams are used in tattoo art, logo design, wedding signage, and jewelry. The hardest letters to ambigram are k, m, q, w, and y because their structures resist 180Β° rotation; designers usually merge them into adjacent letterforms or substitute creative ligatures. The cleanest ambigrams use letters that already rotate symmetrically: o, x, s, z, n, h, and i.
