How the AP Chemistry curve really works

The AP Chemistry exam is scored on a 1–5 scale where 3 is considered "qualified" for college credit, 4 is "well qualified", and 5 is "extremely well qualified". Approximately 13–16% of students score a 5 each year, and about 55–60% earn a 3 or higher. The composite score is calculated by weighting your multiple-choice section to 50% (each MCQ worth ~0.83 points after weighting) and your free-response section to 50% (each FRQ point worth ~1.09 after weighting). College Board adjusts the curve based on overall exam difficulty β€” when the test is harder, the cutoffs drop slightly. The 5 cutoff has hovered around 70% of total points for the last decade. The hardest unit historically is Equilibrium and Acid-Base Chemistry (Units 7–8), which together account for roughly 25% of the exam content.
