How the AP Biology curve works

AP Biology is one of the most popular AP exams, taken by over 280,000 students annually. About 14–16% earn a 5, and roughly 65% earn a 3 or higher. The exam was significantly redesigned in 2020 to emphasize scientific reasoning and data analysis over memorization. FRQ questions now frequently include graphs, experimental design problems, and mathematical models. The hardest units are Gene Expression (Unit 6) and Ecology (Unit 8). Unlike AP Chem, AP Bio allows some reference materials during the exam. The composite score combines both sections equally at 50% each, and College Board adjusts the 5-cutoff by 2–5 points annually based on overall exam difficulty.
